It started in one foot (left) and has now infected one hand (left).&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It manifests itself in itchy blisters and makes my skin sore and cracked. It disfigures some of my nails. Altogether very uncomfortable (drives me to distraction sometimes) and unsightly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have tried repeated treatments with Dactacort cream, which temporarily relieves the symptoms until the fungus returns with avengance later on.&amp;nbsp; It can be really troubling and painful and seems to get worse in the heat. I would be so delighted to get rid of it, but I don&amp;#39;t want to take the drugs the doctor has suggested. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I am considering starting an anti-fungal diet to try and get to the root cause of it. Intrigued by an ad&lt;br /&gt;in the newspaper that promised a diet combining low-carb with natural&lt;br /&gt;fat-burning foods, I sent away for the details and received a pack that&lt;br /&gt;was, essentially, a more extreme version of the Atkins low-carbohydrate&lt;br /&gt;diet. The diet was kickstarted by three days of protein-only foods and,&lt;br /&gt;thereafter, only included foods with a very low glycaemic index (GI)&lt;br /&gt;score, with three snacks a day composed entirely of protein.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;However, like God, you could rest on the seventh day and eat whatever&lt;br /&gt;you wanted, so long as it was followed by a protein-only day.&lt;br /&gt;Although highly sceptical of an approach so heavily reliant on a single food group, I&lt;br /&gt;decided to try it for a week. After all, my metabolic type slightly favours a high protein&lt;br /&gt;consumption, so I eat a lot of protein anyway.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I embarked on my first protein-only day&amp;mdash;and abandoned it by dinner time. In the time&lt;br /&gt;in between, my system was virtually shut down: my brain had ceased to function; my bowels&lt;br /&gt;had blown up with gas and constipation; my breath smelled bad; I carried around a lowgrade&lt;br /&gt;headache; and, on top of that and contrary to all assurances, I felt constantly hungry.&lt;br /&gt;I tell you this by way of a cautionary note related to our cover story this month, which is&lt;br /&gt;about the new evidence of a link between high insulin levels and cancer, as well as evidence&lt;br /&gt;that a low-carbohydrate diet may be cancer-protective.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;But all low-carb diets are not the same. Many, like BodyTrim or the Atkins, initially&lt;br /&gt;cut out other food groups and encourage the consumption of anything, no matter how&lt;br /&gt;processed&amp;mdash;Diet Coke, highly processed cereal bars, bacon fat, protein shakes&amp;mdash;so long as&lt;br /&gt;it&amp;rsquo;s not a carbohydrate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This is why, in the wake of the Atkins &amp;lsquo;diet revolution&amp;rsquo;, the food industry has declared&lt;br /&gt;open season, replacing low-fat foods with a huge array of highly processed low-carb &amp;lsquo;food&amp;rsquo;.&lt;br /&gt;Indeed, heart specialist Dr Dean Ornish has taken it upon himself to act as a one-man&lt;br /&gt;critic of the Atkins approach. As he points out, evidence shows that the Atkins diet can&lt;br /&gt;increase calcium and potassium loss&amp;mdash;as a result of protein overconsumption&amp;mdash;leading to&lt;br /&gt;osteoporosis, or brittle bones. In those with kidney problems, it can put excess stress on&lt;br /&gt;the kidneys, lower blood flow to the heart, lower cognitive function and even, in the case of&lt;br /&gt;one young woman, trigger fatal cardiac arrest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In addition, according to one study, large numbers of patients endure bad breath,&lt;br /&gt;constipation, headache, hair loss, abnormal periods (in the case of women) and dizziness.&lt;br /&gt;Nevertheless, Ornish&amp;rsquo;s own answer to heart disease and cancer is also extreme: a wholefood&lt;br /&gt;vegan diet, which many may find difficult to adhere to and which also often includes&lt;br /&gt;many soy products that themselves have been linked to cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;However, there is a third option: the Montignac diet is low in carbs, yet encourages&lt;br /&gt;healthy amounts of whole natural foods, wholegrains, natural fats, and unlimited amounts&lt;br /&gt;of most fruits and vegetables. The only thing that would help, a very little, was to take some raw organic apple cider vinegar in water.&amp;nbsp; Mostly, though, I would just writhe in pain.&amp;nbsp; I already had been contending with migraines, fatigue, and very stiff, painful muscles in my shoulders and neck.&amp;nbsp; Neither exercise nor massage made any lasting difference to my muscle pain, though gyrotonic was the most helpful.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What I finally worked out when I started getting the severe pain was that I could not digest starches.&amp;nbsp; I had already been avoiding wheat because of my migraines, but I was still eating things like rice and sweet potatoes.&amp;nbsp; I had to give up all starches, as well as sweeteners, including natural ones.&amp;nbsp; I had already stopped most processed foods, not only because of the starch, but also because of the chemicals.&amp;nbsp; I define processed as including anything not a whole food, so low fat cheese would be processed, for example.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now, almost three years later, I can again include small amounts of sweet foods in my diet.&amp;nbsp; I can eat starchy foods that I&amp;#39;ve sprouted, such as sprouted wheat grains and sprouted chickpeas.&amp;nbsp; I almost never have a migraine, my shoulders and neck are loose.&amp;nbsp; I don&amp;#39;t get any pain after eating.&amp;nbsp; Best of all, I have my energy and strength back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The reason I&amp;#39;m mentioning all of this is that some of your symptoms are so similar to mine that you might want to try going a few weeks without starchy or sweet foods to see if it makes a difference.&amp;nbsp; What you would have to eat instead is meat/fish and veg.&amp;nbsp; Ideally the meat would be from grass fed animals and the fish would not be conventially farmed.&amp;nbsp; You would probably need to eat your veg cooked, either stir-fried in butter/olive oil or steamed with butter,olive oil, or flax seed oil on top.&amp;nbsp; It took me about two years before I could begin putting raw vegetables back into my diet.&amp;nbsp; The one exception might be if you have a vitamix and can pulverise your raw vegetables into a soup.&amp;nbsp; Even then it would still be best to add a little fat in order to absorb the fat soluble vitamins - flax seed oil, avocado, olive, or butter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What you would have to avoid is:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;processed food&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;refined grains &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;whole grains&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, jerusalem artichokes, possibly parsnips (though I didn&amp;#39;t)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;beans, peas&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;fruit&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;vegetable juices and fruit juices&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;any sweeteners, including sugar, honey, black strap molasses, maple syrup, agave etc.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;artificial sweeteners&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;refined vegetable oils, any oils other than high quality cold pressed olive or flax seed oil - a high quality coconut oil might be okay for you, though it doesn&amp;#39;t work for me &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;refined salt - celtic sea salt is okay &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;probably nuts, though you could try soaking them for at least 7 hours in water and sea salt, then drying them in the oven at 50 degrees&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;milk products, unless you want to make your own yoghurt/kefir, or unpasteurised milk might be okay &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You might also find that your body is so sensitive right now, particularly with your ulcers, that you need to avoid other foods as well for a time.&amp;nbsp; I also ended up avoiding adding too many spices to my food, though herbs seemed to be okay.&amp;nbsp; Also, lamb worked out to be the best meat for me.&amp;nbsp; For the longest time I felt sicker if I didn&amp;#39;t eat lamb once a day.&amp;nbsp; I believe that this was at least partly due to being iron deficient.&amp;nbsp; Also, I stopped all supplements for a while as I wasn&amp;#39;t digesting them anyway and many contain starches.&amp;nbsp; If I did take any, I searched for liquid versions.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Suprisingly, also, butter, especially raw butter, was far better for me than olive oil.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s individual though.&amp;nbsp; My husband does better on olive oil than butter.&amp;nbsp; I do better with red meat, whereas he seems to need more fish.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To become healthy again today, I found the Specific Carbohydrate Diet helpful, but it only got me part of the way.&amp;nbsp; Recently I&amp;#39;ve noticed that the way of eating that works best for me seems to be closer to the diet found in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, The Weston A Price Foundation, and the Price-Pottenger Foundation, though they still eat too many starches/ sugars for me. &amp;nbsp; I am experimenting with lacto-fermentation now and have also found kefir to be even more beneficial for me than yoghurt or taking probiotics.&amp;nbsp; Another book that I found helpful in understanding how the whole acid/alkaline debate applied to me was The Nutrition Solution by Harold Kristal.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In regard to the weight loss, cutting things out of your diet that you can&amp;#39;t digest right now might help with that.&amp;nbsp; It might be, though, that you have to carry more weight than you&amp;#39;d like to until your body can heal itself.&amp;nbsp; It might take a while to get back on track.&amp;nbsp; Your doctor might be right that it does have to do with hormones, but your hormones fluctuating may be a symptom rather than the root cause of your weight or other problems.&amp;nbsp; Most speakers focused on achieving better health by gentle exercise, meditation, massage, skin care, and they were followed by a medical doctor who emphasised that there are now pills to not only overcome vitamin and mineral deficiencies, but also to extend life expectancy.&amp;nbsp; He himself took over 100 pills a day, half that of his US mentor, and it was suggested that if 35-year-olds started a course they could reasonably expect to live to a 100 or longer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Most participants seemed to prefer the idea of eating vitamin-rich vegetables and fruit from their gardens and thought that they would find it very difficult to swallow over 100 pills a day, even if they were drinking three litres of water a day!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;During our talk we mentioned the best vegetables to eat, and for breakfast that we included a salad (as do those Spaniards still following any remnants of a Mediterranean diet) and a freshly-laid egg.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;There was an immediate audience reaction - &amp;lsquo;Salad for breakfast, ugh!&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;aren&amp;rsquo;t eggs dangerous?&amp;rsquo; We pointed out that the English newspapers had recently reported that the British Nutrition Foundation now admitted that it had been wrong in suggesting for many years that eggs were dangerous and that its views since 2005 were that &amp;lsquo;Going to work &amp;ndash; or gardening - on an egg&amp;rsquo; was a great idea, except for the small number of people with&amp;nbsp; familial hypercholesterolaemia . &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We explained&amp;nbsp; that our salad was not of the lettuce leaf variety, but that it included nasturtium, parsley, rocket, marjoram, red lettuce and young spinach leaves, chopped young garlic stalks and root, sliced spring onions, sprouted radish and broccoli seeds with extra virgin olive oil as a dressing to give us a good dose of vitamins, minerals and, most importantly, natural antioxidants and antibiotics. Home-grown tomatoes, carrots and shitake mushrooms are added when in season.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Anyone can grow this breakfast in a small-raised bed or even in containers on apartment terraces as well as in the open garden. You can try it for 1 month, and see the results. I trust this is the sustainable solution to maintain health with regard to the above mentioned list of illness, and also reduces stress in general on your body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Strike out of your diet: flour (any pastry, bread, pasta...), potatoes and rice. Try to avoid sugar as much as you can.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Your CAN eat, however: sweet potatoes, occasional wild rice, buckwheat.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Also, you can eat red meat, fish, sea food and such, as well as other non-mentioned foods here.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Try to have your food as organic as possible.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This will not take a toll on you once you get used to it, but will significantly promote your health on the long run and most probably lower your cholesterol levels.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you&amp;#39;re taking any drugs currently to maintain your cholesterol level - cautiously apply the diet with your&amp;nbsp; doctor supervision, as gradual reducing your medications may be required as you progress.
