Dear Gabby,
I have hypothyroidism, so does my Dad. I have been on 50 mcg of thyroxin for about seven years. I don't see the problem in taking thyroxin. Years ago when there was no thyroxin people got terrible effects from hypothyroidism including myxedema and psychosis. You can also get hair loss, dry skin, split nails and be cold and put on weight. The good news is that if you take the thyroxin you don't have the condition at all!!
50 or 75 mcg a day is not a high dose, my Dad has been on 100 a day for 30 years. Other people I know are also on 100 but the dose should be individualised and depend on your blood test results. If your levels of T4 are still low then you may need to increase your dose a bit. I found acupuncture very helpful and I take iodine but that is in addition to the thyroxin.
I would not upset yourself about this. There is no shame in taking thyroxin........................thankfully there is such a safe way to treat this condition which in the past could disable and kill people.
