    Dental X-Rays

Hello, my daughter needs an x-ray to find out if root canal treatment is necessary but is anxious because she is still breast-feeding.  Can anyone please advise her if the x-ray is advisable.  Many thanks, Margaret

    Re: Dental X-Rays

Ask the Dentist if there is any other way to determine if the treatment is necessary other than by X-ray.

Not sure if it can affect breast milk but we are talking about radiation so it probably does in some way.

Can she wait until she has stopped breast feeding?

She needs to read "Root Canal Coverup" by George Meinig or anything by Weston Price about root canals...visit www.ppnf.org

The root canal work could give her more problems than the x-ray...read the above books/website and then decide.

    Re: Dental X-Rays

Many thanks Blobby.  I will follow your guides.  I instinctively feel she should not have the x-ray at the moment.  Hopefully she will be able to wait.  She wants to keep feeding Emily as long as possible so that has to take priority.  I suggested she asks to have the tooth out rather than the root canal treatment but she said it would be too unsightly.  anyway, thanks again, I will look into it further.  best wishes, margaret

    Re: Dental X-Rays

Margaret, your daughter's anxiety is understandable, but no harm can come to the baby from a dental Xray. Only a tiny dose of radiation is used, and focused on one small area. But even mammograms are safe during breastfeeding (though not usually helpful in diagnosis because of the density of breast tissue). Breastfeeding is meant to continue for years, so I wouldn't advise waiting for the Xray until it's finished!

See this link to a US site (unfortunately the NHS doesn't give such comprehensive info) which explains various mistaken ideas about what could harm breastfeeding.

    http://pediatrics.about.com/library/breastfeeding/blbreastfeedingp.htm

The site points out that most doctors, including paediatricians and breast surgeons, don't have comprehensive educatin in lactation. The same applies to many midwives and health visitors. For such queries, It's best to ask a breastfeeding specialist such as an accredited voluntary breastfeeding counsellor, or an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). There's a national breastfeeding helpline: 0844 20 909 20

I'm happy to be contacted through my website about this or any other breastfeeding query.

Hi Pally, many thanks for your reply.  It has reassured me.  The pain from her tooth started progressing up her face so when she returned to the dentist she went ahead with the x-ray and started the treatment.  I will pass on your information to her, and once again I appreciate your advice and offer of further advice.  best wishes, margaret

    Re: Dental X-Rays

It is essential that you fully investigate root fillings before they are placed.   Unsightly doesn't come into it!     There is a report of a lady who arrived at her dentist in a wheelchair and had a root-filled tooth removed.  The removed tooth was placed under the skin of a rabbit and whithin 48 hours the rabbit had arthritis and the patient could walk again.
I had a tooth root-filled in August and am now considering having it removed.
My wife has arthritis.  She had all mercury fillings replaced in 1990 and showed much improvement.  In January she will have a full head X-ray to find if any root filled teeth are causing problems and will most likely have them removed also.

Thanks for that John James.  Personally, hopefully older and wiser than a 22 year old, I have grave grave doubts about root canal treatments.  My daughter is determined not to allow any amalgam into her mouth and she is gradually understanding that you do have to question the experts.  I appreciate your comments, thanks again, margaret

    Re: Dental X-Rays

I would be more worried about a root canal than an x-ray. No matter how well a dentist cleans out the canal there is always some bacteria left. Once locked in by the root canal, bacteria change to anaerobic bacteria, producing the some of the most poisonous toxins known to man. Talk to a holistic dentist if you want to know more on the subject.
