    Gum Disease

I have been informed by a periodontist that I have deep pockets around my teeth caused by gum disease.  She advises 'deep cleaning' of these pockets under a local anaesthetic. The theory is that the cleaning will rid the pocket of any bacteria and the gum will grow back on to the tooth. There will be some gum shrinkage and increased sensitivity which may be permanent. The alternative I am told is losing my teeth (though they don't feel wobbly at all!).

I don't want to lose my teeth but at the same time am reluctant to undergo the 'deep cleaning'.  Does anyone have any experience, positive or negative, of this procedure ?

    Thankyou

    Carmel

    Re: Gum Disease

Read about the benefits of the nutritient CO-Q10 and especially that related to periodontitis. Better still, start taking it at, at least, 100 mgs daily. Best to take the dry capsule filled ones rather than those filled with polyunsaturated fat which depresses the immunity. I currently obtain mine from www.iherb.com which, even with shipping, is cheaper than purchasing here in the UK.

    Re: Gum Disease

I may have a similar problem and I would be grateful if there was a solution.  I have tried hard to raise my fruit intake over the last 4 years and make myself, and the rest of the family a fruit salad every day.  Over the last 2 years I have experienced an increasing sensitivity in my upper left back teeth to hot and cold.  Also and excruciating 'nerve' pain can break out that is very intensive, but only lasts a few seconds.  This can happen ove its owwn accord, and also if a sharp item of food in caught between the teeth.  I have been examined by my dentist and e-rayed but there is nothing obviously wrong except a small amount of slight gum recession.  My dentist thinks it may be the fruit intake increasing the acidity in my mouth and raising my sensitivity.   As an experiment I am giving up the fruit for a few weeks to see if matter improve.

I would like to know if there is some less acidic fruits than my usual fare of apples, oranges, pears, grapes, plums, pineapple, melon, etc

     Cheers

    Re: Gum Disease

About 2 years ago I changed dentists due to moving location and their dental nurse informed me I had pockets which required "root planing", a procedure which sounded most undesirable.  I declined her offer and instead had 3 monthly cleaning instead of my previous 6 monthly visits.  The gums did not get any bettter and eventually I decided to undergo the root planing although I asked her to do it without anaesthetic which she agreed to although I believe the bleeding is less with anaesthetic than without.  The outcome was miraculous and the bleeding from my gums which I had suffered for quite a few years ceased immediately and I have not had any further problem.  I should have agreed much sooner. I make it a habit not to recommend anything but I think I must recommend this.

    Codell,

The condition of the mouth, teeth, gums can only reflect the condition of the whole body.

Your problem is just an external sign of an internal problem.

    Re: Gum Disease

    Hello,

    Pure Coconut Oil

Apparently pure coconut oil is fantastic for teeth and gums.  A friend puts a couple of drops under her tongue after cleaning her teeth.  She swills it around her mouth and then swallows it.  She had started taking the oil as a cure for terribly sensitive teeth.  She said it worked within a day.  After having used it for a while, she went to the dental hygienist for a teeth clean.  The hygienist started then asked what she had done to her gums - they were so much better than they had been.  My friend told her about the coconut oil, expecting derision, but the hygienist said oh yes, coconut oil is the best thing for teeth.

Can't vouch for it yet myself, but plan to try it. I also have bad gums and the outlook is always so gloomy when I visit the dentist!

    Re: Gum Disease

shrinking gums is caused by a toxic ingrediant in toothpaste called sodium lauryl sulfate. This stuff is used in industry to de-grease machines.  For a toothpaste free of this poison google greenpeople

    Re: Gum Disease

    Hi,

I was in a similar predicament and did not want to go through the deep cleansing procedure. I discovered a blotting brush which is a toothbrush specifically for removing the bacteria that causes gum disease. I also used a Mouthwash called Eliminator by a company called Neways, 3 - 4 times a day for 3 months. Now I use it in the morning and evening with their toothpaste. My gum disease has not disappeared but my hygenist and dentist are impressed with the results and I have not needed periodental surgey! I also used EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) to help me. My gums seem to be stonger and the bleeding has stopped completely.

    Hope this helps,

    Re: Gum Disease

Hello, as a Nutritionist I must ask you to direct your 'mouse' to add this web site - resourcesforlife.net when you are there, open the 'oral hygiene' link and you will be able to read about the answer that you are seeking.  This isn't 'something' new, as Dr J E Phillips has been holding seminars in the states for many years but, as it isn't a 'drug fix' for the relief of Gum Disorders he had to hold many talks to alleviate peoples basic lack of understand - when it comes to oral hygiene, that is.  Hope this answers your question.  Best regards Peter

    Re: Gum Disease

Only eat RIPE fruit otherwise it's all acid.  Not sure that so much sugar (fructose) is good for you anyway, what made you want to increase your fruit intake as a solution?  It's possibly the sugar hitting the nerve that's causing you the pain - i'd quit the fruit all together for at least a month and i'm sure you'll experience several health benefits!  Good luck

    Re: Gum Disease

I had this problem some years ago now.  The procedure itself was painless with the local anaesthetic. I had a few cleanings and after this intiial attention, the dental team measured the pockets to determine the healing that had occurred.

I have read that this disease also predisposes us to other health concerns including heart disease.  As well, it keeps your breath fresher to have that bacteria that is growing in there removed.

I now go regularly to have my teeth cleaned and feel the better for it.  It seems intuitively the right thing to do.  I really want to keep my teeth for a very long lifetime and I believe this is the right thing to do.

There was healing for me and my mouth is now much healthier than before which contributes to my overall health.

I also think that there is less sensitivity AFTER the cleaning than before because with those pockets of bacteria in your gums there is constant irritation.  By the way, I have always been very conscientious about my oral hygiene but these pockets came anyway but were due to my years of smoking many years ago.

I hope this helps.  From my perspective, I would reccommend it.

    Re: Gum Disease

I really recommend you try Forever Toothgel from Forever Living Products - Aloe Vera with Propolis from the beehive - and no poisons! It is truly amazing for gum health and has made a huge difference to me and my family. A friend has used it for 3 years - she was having severe problems with gum recession but now is making huge progress. All she has done is used the toothgel and drink Aloe Vera (Forever's) every day.

    Hope this helps you.

    Re: Gum Disease

I have had the same problem and went through this procedure.... but the gum disease did not clear up.... it continued and new "deep" cleanings were necessary.... Then I started using a gum gel by the commercial name here PARODIUM (I do not know what the ingredients are...) and my gum desease has been finally contained.... I do not know if this product exists in your area....

    Re: Gum Disease

I had the same problem and solved it by the time of my next semi-annual dental visit.  I first went out and purchased a water-pik appliance to clean around the gum line each day.  Next, I gargled with a 50/50 mix of Hydrogen Peroxide (stablized 3%) and water (once a day) following the water pik.  The next time I visited the Dentist, the technician kept looking from my gums to my dental records with a perplexed look on her face.  The dentist said my gums were in excellent shape.
