LDN and Crohn's Disease in a 15 year old

My son has severe Crohn's Disease diagnosed 2 years ago. He's tried the medical route with steroids, azathioprin, pentasa and the quasi medical route with modulen via NG tube. He's also done elemental foods, dietary limitations, nutrition and Chinese medicine. We have not yet gone the final medical route of Infliximab because of the serious side effects (it can cause incurable cancers). We came across LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone) a few months ago. He is in remission BUT (a big but) he has sleep disturbances (can't get to sleep until very late and gets up very late), is depressed about his life (who wouldn't be), had a severe dose of eczema (which is subsiding now), is losing his hair (bald patches appearing - I understand this is a symptom of Crohn's).

does anyone else have experience with LDN for Crohn's in young people?

can LDN be used with a low dose of steroids - if so what's the protocol?

    or any other ideas....

    Garth,

LDN can be used with steroids, but it must be 10mg or lower in an adult. For children it would be to be calculated based upon the weight. You would probably need to discuss this with your son's doctor.

As far as the sleep disturbances, did he just start LDN? If so, it can certainly cause one to be restless. I experienced this when I first started LDN. It is much better now, although I still have occasional times when I'm not able to sleep. I chalk this up to having multiple sclerosis which can cause sleep disturbances anyway.

I belong to several LDN Yahoo groups. I actually posted a message last night about your situation and your questions asking for feedback. There are many people on these boards who have crohn's, IBS, ulcerative colitis, etc. These are some of the responses/suggestions for you below:

    Hi Garth

You can see a database of people using LDN for Crohn's at    www.ldndatabase.com    and I hope you will add your son there too. We need as many people adding their experience with LDN as we can so in the future people like yourself will be able to see what real people are saying. Whether it is good or bad, You will see on the database that 97% of people Find LDN to be improving their life

    Hello Garth

Have you tried a series of treatments on the Quantum machine, and probably also treatment on the Rife, with a good Homeopathic around and using the medicine subscribed by the homeopath,  we were able to cure our daughter, aged 8 when diagnosed with Crohn's in the beginning stages. Do sincerely hope you will be helped.

One of my cousins suffered from this horrid complaint when she was quite young too.  Part of the problem had its roots in family dynamics but slippery elm was considered to be helpful. However, if there is a family conflict (another, preferred sibling, call for attention, punishing the parents, etc.) it is important to work on this first.

A while later I worked in a clinic specialising in colonic irrigation and one of the therapists had been cured of Crohn's (which also started when she was a teenager) through regular colonic irrigation and herbs.

If this would be my child, I would try mainly row diet. Read Tonya Zawasta row food diet. I know, it my be difficult with 15 yrs old. Invest in a good juicer, Omega juicers are better then Champion. Start with getting rid off parasites with Organica Reaserch parasites formula, it is all herbal. Fresh cabbage juice supposed to cure Croh's disease. However, you have to be patient with that kind of treatement, it is a slow process, require commitment, but without sides effect, and there is promise  the cure. When you go with what modern medicine offers you will be easing the symptomes, no cure, and you will ruin other organs. I would also add wheat grass juice at least twice a week ( smal amounts). It is very potent and need to keep in mouth for a minute or two before swallow.

There are natural cures. Check Well Being Journal web, and see if they have any articles about the subject. My friend with MS  follow the diet recommended in one of their articles and after one year stop using shots, which she was taking for last 17 years. She is full of energy and joined cycling club.

Re: LDN and Crohn's Disease in a 15 year old

There is a Japanese technology used in hospitals there for 30 years, which transforms ordinary tap water into water with health-enhancing properties. The water helps to balance over-acidity in the body which creates the conditions for the development of many illnesses. In addition, it is strongly anti-oxidant and prevents and reverses some free radical damage. It is better absorbed by the body since it has smaller molecule clusters than tap or bottled water.  In addition, the same device produces a different kind of water which is excellent for external skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, burns, acne, athlete's foot and more. We have testimonials of people with Crohn's disease, digestive disorders of all kinds, and other illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, diabetes and more who have had major improvements in their health by drinking this water. Please see www.WatersofHealth.com for more info. I can send you specific information if you email me at watersofhealth@gmail.com.

Get the book "Breaking the Vicious Cycle", Barnes and Noble either has it or can get it for you.  My husband had severe Crohn's in 2000 and after being on this program for 3 months his gut healed and he returned to normal life.  The eating program is very simple but strict on the foods that he cannot have.  In my research I have seen that most Crohn's sufferers are highly stressed even if they do not appear to be.  I kids it is the expectation of excellence that they do not feel that they can attain or family stress of some sort combined with a fast food diet and soda.  It would also be good to get him to a good therapist.

For immediate help, go to    http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/   and begin this TODAY!!

    Blessing and healing to you.

I know how terrible this disease can be for anyone and recently I've become very interested in the new theory about Vit D3.  I am sure I read somewhere (I've tried to find it but cannot) that Vit D3 helps this sort of problem.  I had my blood tested and since I have been taking Vit D3 I can eat wheat to a limited amount, I have been very intollerant of wheat for decades.

Re: LDN and Crohn's Disease in a 15 year old

    Hi Garth,

If you go to http://health.groups.yahoo.cpm/lowdosenaltrexone and join the group you can ask for info on Crohn's.  I've been on this list for a couple of months now and it's incredibly informative.  I think there are something like 160,000 members worldwide, many of whom are medical professionals who are prescribing LDN for a variety of illnesses.  The daily digests are quite long but you can easily skip through until you find what you want.

I have seen quite a few posts from Crohn's sufferers who are positively benfitting from LDN.

The sleep issue can be a problem but it usually wears off after a while and doesn't affect everyone on LDN. Has your son tried the Specific Carbohydrate diet from Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall?  Even if he does try the LDN it is still important to eliminate all grains and some dairy as the opiates in these foods will affect the efficacy of the LDN.

    Good Luck! ,

    Garth

I would recommned you contact the LDN Research Trust www.ldnresearchtrust.org.  There is a wealth of experience available there and some excellent contacts.  For the sleep deprivation and the possibility of underlying stresses causing it seek out (by recommendation) a good hypnotherapist.

    Good luck

Re: LDN and Crohn's Disease in a 15 year old

The following is an unsolicited testimony of the reversal of the so-called disease, Crohn's.

    Dear Dr. Young,

Our little girl, Babette, is now three and a half years old. She was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when she was two. We saw several doctors with all the same answers: anti-inflammatory medicine, antibiotics and even steroids at some point to stop the bleeding in the daily diarrhea.

Result: Babette gained 1 pound in 6 months - if we can call that a result ...

After we found Dr. Young and spoke to him overthe phone, he assured us that Babette would be fine and we started the pH Miracle Living Lifestyle and Diet right away.

WE GOT RESULTS IN 48 HOURS !!!

My wife and I could not believe it.

I will always remember the look we gave to each other.

Since then, that was December 1st, 2006, Babette is doing fantastic. She gained 5 pounds, she is happy, her stools are normal, no more bleeding and she never looked so beautiful !!!

Dr. Young really changed our lives, bringing all of us to a better health. My wife and I are learning also to live a healthier way of life through a better diet and a greater respect of our body through what we put in it.

There is no words to explain how happy we are.

We are doing the best we can to spread the word about Dr. Young's diet and alkaline way of life.

We trustfully gave Dr. Young's information contacts to many people in need of better health and we will continue to do so as long as we live.

Thanks a million, Dr. Young and we will keep you posted of Babette's development in a near future.

    Babette's Mom and Dad.

    Westport, CT

Last night we had an alkalarian dinner prepared by Babette's Mom and Dad and it was absolutely delcious. The best part of the dinner was seeing Babette, who is now six years old, healthy, beautiful and free from ALL dis-ease. No more Crohn's because Babette lives the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet.

Re: LDN and Crohn's Disease in a 15 year old

    http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/newsletter/2009-march.shtml

There is also a useful item on Crohn's and Vitamin D3 here.

The problem with Crohn's and vitamin D is that absorption through the intestines cannot be relied on. So we have to use sunlight or in winter tanning beds or tanning tubes with UVB output.

Another alternative would be to use a high strength D3 oil based gel supplement but snip the capsule and massage the drop of olive oil into the skin.

Healthy Origins, Vitamin D3, 10,000 IU, 360 Softgels

Vitamin D3 is naturally made at or near the skin surface so applying it transdermally is quite natural. It may well lead to a better uptake than through the digestive system.  If you want to try improving 25(OH)D status orally then taking several lower dose vitamin D capsules through the day may be better than just once a day. For everyone else Once Daily for vitamin D is fine, This suggestion to spread the intake through the day for people with inflamed digestive systems is to try to get round the absorption problem and little but often may work.

The only way to find out if what you are doing is working is to have a 25(OH)D test from time to time.

http://www.grassrootshealth.net/daction this charity offers them at cost price by post as part of a trial. Cost about $40 or £24.
