My friend in the UK has just been diagnosed with Macular in one eye and has been told that she'll go blind. I know someone here in Perth who cured herself but it was 15 years ago and she's not sure of the diet etc that she followed. Is there anyone who has had experience of this who can give my friend some hope?

Dear Heather, I was diagnosed the MD 6 years ago at the tender age of 38yrs. I am a qualified Nutritional Therapist now (as a result of the diagnosis) and have had a lot of success with this condition. If your friend would like to contact me directly I am very happy to take her through the protocol. How old is she? Shirleyhalpin@eircom.net

There is a Japanese technology which processes ordinary tap water through a countertop device which changes its chemistry and creates properties which are very beneficial for health. The water is strongly anti-oxidant and I heard an interview with an eye doctor who mentioned that it was good for preventing or reversing many vision problems, among them macular degeneration. Drinking this water can also help with a large variety of problems such as insomnia, hormonal problems, depressions, high blood pressure, diabetes, digestive problems, asthma, autism, gout, cancer and more. Please look at my website www.WatersofHealth.com for more information. These devices can be purchased anywhere in the world. Feel free to contact me for more information at watersofhealth@gmail.com. All the best, Hana Dolgin Hydration Consultant

From The Organic Way magazine, for members of Garden Organic, in issue 196 summer 2009, members letters. I have copied the letter from a lady living in Somerset completely, as it pertains to the query. I used to suffer from macular degeneration, an increasingly common, distressing eye complaint. Eating kale throughout the winter (cooked) and marigold petals throughout summer (raw) helped get rid of it completely. Both plants contain vast amounts of lutein, an essential nutrient for eye health. Editor's note: this letter refers to the pot maigold, Calendula officinalis, NOT the French marigold or tagetes. C J

I'm also in the Uk and have macular degeneration. There is some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that in fact macular disease on its own doesn't make you go totally blind. It may make you "legally blind" or "registered blind" for the medico-legal system, which means your sight is so poor you can't read the top letter on the eye chart. Classic symptoms are also loss of colour vision, and inability to recognise people's faces.
There is no such thing as a cure at this stage, so I don't know how your friend can claim she cured herself. She ought to be world famous if so.
No cure, but there is plenty you can do. Of course there are any number of charlatans around who want to sell you variants of snake oil, but really MD is too serious an issue to play about with such things.
You don't say what form of macular disease your friend has, or what age she is. Most MD is in older people (well, over 50), but there are similar conditions that affect younger people, such as Stargardt's Disease.
The main thing you can do is adopt a healthy lifestyle - don't smoke, eat a decent diet with loads of fresh fruit and vegetables, and take plenty of exercise. Oh yes, and wear sunglasses in bright weather. Glare is often a problem in MD, and one cause can be blue, violet or ultra-violet light. I've found a cheap pair of sunglasses with reddish lenses is good enough to combat a lot of this. Blue light, by the way is definitely to be avoided, which is a bit of a shame on a happy-go-lucky summer day by the sea, but it's just tough, I'm sorry.
Anti-oxidants are helpful in slowing down the progression of MD, and rich sources of these are all sorts of fruit and vegetables. Omega 3 fatty acids from salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, etc., are also proving to be helpful in preserving your sight for a bit longer.
See the video, "Nutrition: Separating Fact From Fiction" http://www.mdsupport.org/nsg/troyersession4/index.html
.... and, believe me, I monitor plenty of news feeds, and there is plenty of fiction. Don't touch anything that says "Lutein - cure for blindness" or "You can cure serious eye disease by chewing a few of our miracle blueberry capsules". All this is nonsense, and the clue is that they're only offering a very partial answer.
There is a vitamin formula being worked on called AREDS2, which is actually based on research!!! It's worth asking an ooptometrist or eye doctor about this. And they probably won't know what you're talking about. Send them round to me. Just avoid cheap and nasty vitamins, as they won't be up to the job.
If your friend is depressed about the diagnosis, which is quite normal, there are all sorts of communities she can join, such as MDJunction.org, MDSupport.org and in the UK maculardisease.org. She may also benefit from being shown a bit of care by a therapeutic masseur or reiki practitioner or whatever. Anything that helps give her a positive attitude may help.
As her sight worsens, as it may well do eventually, there are talking computers, smartphones and all sorts of other technology to make life easier. The price tags for some of it are scary, but shop around - there may be a free solution, like the Australian developed free screen reader, NVDA.
All these things are ways of "living with", not "cure".
MD is going to be such a big deal in the future that there is plenty of research going on into treatments, but a lot of it is still in early stages.
There are low-level lasers, treatments that drain debris from the eyes, and, of course stem cells, both adult and embryonic. Some of these may be real treatments in 5 to 10 years' time. They will not be cures, as the person will still have underlying MD, but some of the effects may be reversed.
As for myself, I've taken up photography. This makes me make the most of my sight, and amazes the neighbours. Call it an act of defiance if you like.
Hope some of that helps. MD isn't the end of the world, but most of us have to find new ways of doing things - quite an adventure, in fact.

I don't know anything about Macular degeneration, but I felt I had to mention that in my years as a spiritual healer I have known a number of illnesses disappearing completely through a refusal to accept any dis-ease in the body. One case in point is someone I met who had been given a maximum of 3 months to live by doctors as she had a terminal blood disease - similar to leukemia. She was advised to put her affairs in order. She had 3 young daughters and refused to accept the diagnosis. She changed her diet, she did absolutely everything she could to give her body the best chance for health, she worked on her belief systems so that no negativity came in and 12 years later she's alive and well. Wishing you well. Sue

Following on from the statement that "there are treatments that drain debris from the eyes", there was a recent article in the Daily Mail (24-Nov-09) about blood filtering treatment, known as rheopheresis. Here's the link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1230321/How-cleaning-blood-help-better.html My mother has wet AMD but refuses to give up smoking, which all conventional and complementary medical practitioners advise, and now has very poor sight despite talking complementary supplements and receiving both conventional drugs and laser treatment.

I am rarely moved sufficiently to respond to internet chats but had to endorse Sue's opinion on spiritual healing. My mother was only 71 when I was told by her gp that she could die at any minute from severe heart disease. In desperation, I took her to London's finest 'alternative' doctor, someone who had been through the NHS allopathic system and had switched to combine those conventional disciplines with intensive study of the simplest and the most technically advanced complementary systems. To my dismay, he endorsed the gp's verdict; I had nowhere to turn but to my own spiritual beliefs and decided to simply give my mother the best life could offer. We combined both doctors' regimes in moderation but embraced joy in its most simple forms - noticing nature in every tiny shoot pushing through cement or revelling in the joy of a toddler's helpless giggles. We thanked God every day, several times, for all that we had already been given, realising how generous He had been to have got us that far. We prayed quietly and simply at home - just for a few seconds each time, but with feeling - for miracles, and they came. We learned to be humble, laughed a lot and shared all we had with others, and our own gifts multiplied exponentially. On low occasions, we simply expected better the next day - and we received it. People thought I was putting my life on hold to safeguard and prolong my mother's but, in fact, I was learning how spirituality really worked and enriching my own life with exquisitely beautiful experiences worth more than any words in any language could ever describe. It was more than faith, more than prayer, more than simply expecting good things to happen. It started for us with an Attitude of Gratitude and moved on from there. The formula we devised is too long to state here, but it works - superlatively. After that devastating prognosis, compounded by one or two other life threatening ailments she developed along the way, my mother lived an additional FOURTEEN happy, feisty and active years until her death in 2008. Her legacy of 'easy spiritual survival' is, to me, priceless. I have shared it since her death with many others to their phenomenal benefit. Gratitude, humour, love and forgiveness are great allies to adopt to get you started! Change your thought systems to look for the good in others - it will then be found far, far more often. Good luck and much, much love to whoever reads and can benefit from these simple, free tips. Mercedes

Ive come across a few things that seem to help & I have seen research from the US showing artificial sweeteners do make the problem worse. They are also thought to cause the problem too in some cases. The reason being is that they are vaso-constrictors, causing the blood vessels around the eyes to shrink & reduce/stop the flow of blood. What I have seen help massively with a few of our customers is a change in diet. They got the info from http://www.drjoeesposito.com & started to add to their diet raw ginger & garlic, plus other spicy foods as these are known to open up the blood vessels. They also switched to a plant based diet & removed most of the nasty saturated fat too. I have also read that EFT practised on a twice daily basis has improved vision for many people, not just those with MD.
From the 4 people I know who have tackled the problem one 80 year lady who couldn't read at all, claimed her MD had cleared up altogether by taking a fruit & veg supplement, ginger, garlic, cutting out processed sugars, sweeteners, caffeine etc. I did see her change from being housebound to be able to go to church & go shopping on her own. Sadly she died 3 years later just as the Drs were taking an interest.. 2 others claimed a big improvement when they did almost the same as the 1st lady but were in poor health before the MD started. The last got a slight improvement & was taking an eye supplement bit I have no idea what it was. G

Hello Heather, My mother had suffered with MD for sometime before she died and I could not help her , However I discovered a supplement called Vision and the long term use of it has had the following results.
I am successfully helping improve people's sight who have been diagnosed with MD. A retired lady nurse aged 78yrs has been taken 2 products for the past 2 years. I have her permission to quote the improvement she's found, She has gone from using a magnifier and strong spot light and glasses from her optician (who said there were no stronger glasses they could give her). Now she does not use a magnifier, her prescription for glasses has improved and her optician is amazed, this lady tells everyone about me and is forever passing my number on to people.
Also her brother of 85yrs has the same condition and although I have not been able to improve his vision I have been able to stop the deterioration and his sight is static and no worse. I would like to give people a light at the end of what I know my mum called a dark tunnel. Hope this helps Mary
My contact detaials are 01925 211 393 or 07801 702 693, my email is mary@the-cav-group.com I am an independent healthier living advisor.

Mercedes Beautiful story, and a timely reminder to myself, living alone and precariously in a foreign land far from home. It also reinforces for me the difference between spirituality (and connection with Energy) and man-made, man-operated, controlling and threatening religions. What a sense of freedom your way offers; it's a little harder to keep oneself up to the mark without another to laugh with and stay focused with, but I'll just come back and read this again, if I start to waver. Thank you Heidi
