Cervarix and Gardasil

Can anyone tell me whether Cervarix - the GlaxoSmithKline HPV vaccine the Scottish government is poised to give to all girls aged between 12 and 17 - differs in any significant ways from Merck's Gardasil, about which WDDTY has been cautioning for some time? Specifically, does it have a comparable safety record, a better one or a poorer one?

There is a major advertising campaign (the website has the emotive URL fightcervicalcancer.org.uk) now under way across Scotland and when the schools go back in 10 days' time, the pressure will be piled on eligible girls to take part. (The programme is school-based.) I am encouraging my 16-year-old daughter to research the matter very thoroughly before committing and am instinctively against her having these jabs (she's not had MMR or MenC), but at the same time I feel that I should allow her to make her own decision based on all the available information.What I need, though, is a lot more information, so all help greatly appreciated!

Found 7 events with Vaccine MMR and Symptom is Brain damage

This last one should not please our resident Dr Saji, who was "so relieved" to find that it was proven (Yeah, Right!) that MMR was not responsible for autism....

This is just what I found with almost random selection. You can choose the vaccine, click on it so it goes in the right-hand column, then in the box above above are myriad symptoms; you choose one, click on it and it will come up with Yes/No symptoms to your chosen vaccine.

Of course, this is a government statistics site; we can be sure that there are a great many more out there which never made it to publication - and this is just a U.S. one, never mind British, French, NZ or even our next-door neighbour, whose symptoms of brain damage might not show up, of course .. he he...

Hi.

My mum has metastatised kidney cancer and has basically been written off by the medical community. We are trying anything that may potentially help and have just started using oral Hydrogen Peroxide (25 drops per 6-8 ounces of ionized water) 3 times daily. My mum is also taking penicillin and steroids as well as some other alternative therapies (maitake mushroom extract, flax oil and green tea extract (all of which supposedly have great cancer fighting qualities)). Can anyone tell me whether this mix of medicines and Hydrogen peroxide is safe and whether they compliment or fight each other.

i was put onto this horrible little bugger of a drug about 4 months ago for seizures and the doctor isn't even sure that the cause of the attacks are actually epilepsy! i'm a student struggling with university and i have been trying to battle depression on my own without drugs and the arrival of these are obviously less than helpful!! i've been having real trouble concentrating since they've started and its been made even worse by the medication, its messing about with my eyes also i cant focus properly and my hair is coming out. its funny because it seems to have made initial problems before i was prescibed a lot worse so i wonder if i should stop until the doctor actually gives me a proper diagnosis? as its not stopped the seizures yet and my GPs response to my cries for help are to take more and more a day until i cant physically take anymore without "serious" harm!! also something else that's strange is that the siezures started when i moved house into a new flat!! i guess i'm just a bizarre creature! SO.. so far lamotrigine has not been all that positive with me!

methacholine test

Has anyone had any side effects to a methacholine test to check for asthma. I had minor breathing problems before the test, when I got around a respiratory irritant, but now since taking the methacholine test where my breathing dropped 52% I had troubling breathing from day to day. The doctor has put me on numberous inhalers, inhaler solutions, pills, etc and I seem to be allergic to everything. There's times I don't feel like I'm going to be able to take in enough oxygen to keep me alive. Is this normal?

Does anyone have experience of taking medication for depression? I am on Mirtazapine 15mg, having gradually reduced from 45mg. The consultant says I should stay on the drug for six months after becoming completely well, in order to "stay well". Her associate (who treats me) says to come off it straight away - rather than continue to reduce the dose ie one day on, one day off.

I read today's news re prescribing OP drugs for 'flu with great personal interest.

I was prescibed Alendronic acid 18 months ago as a precaution as I was taking steroids for PMR ( poymyalgia rheumatica ). All seemed ok until the fourth or fifth week when I experienced wheezing and numb lips. In case this was a chest infection I was given a 5 day course of penicillin. All ok until the day following the last dose when I had a severe reaction which meant a day in hospital. This took nearly a month to clear and my notes are now marked for both Alendronates and Penicillin.

In June this year a friend broke her arm and was recommended she take Alendronic Acid as a precaution. She discussed this with our GP and said that, in the light of my experience, she was not very happy to follow the advice. Although our GP asked for a bone density scan to ascertain whether, in fact, she had brittle bones, this was refused as, as an 83 year old female, she obviously needed OP treatment!

It does seem as though these drugs are recommended rather too readily.

Has anyone tried Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)??

I have searched all over this site for any mention of LDN, which is a hot topic in the media at present, and can find nothing! Is this is a case of WDDTY not telling us? I am a member of an LDN forum and the reports, internationally, of its successes with M.S, Fibromyalgia, autism, Crohn's etc etc are too impressive to be dismissed.

There is a petition on the Downing Street website calling for more research into this drug which, reportedly has little or no side effects and is cheap! The resulting benefits from widespread use of LDN would not only save the NHS billions but improve the health of so many sufferers without the cost and side effects of the commonly prescribed drugs.

It works by switching off the immune system for 2-3 hours at night which, subsequently, gives the immune system a massive boost the next day and releases a burst endorphins.

Has anyone any experience of LDN? I would love to hear more about it from anyone with first hand experience..

Hi everyone

I have to face into this decision and am pretty sure am going to opt out, but would love some opinions. Have just read about 3 books on subject and would love any thoughts on...

- What would you do if your baby, have you been in this situation or experience of as a professional?

- What illnesses can I expect her to get without vaccination?

- Are these illnesses managable with no side effects? Ie mumps and measles sound quite scary to manage. Any advise on this? What kind of practitioner should I see if she does get them?

Any thoughts or anyone who has experience of would be most gratefully received.

A few months ago I had a severe allergic reaction to the colouring and coating on Rosuvastatin which

was caused by E171 (Titanium Dioxide) and E172 Red Iron Oxide and the coating Cospovidone.

I am now trying to find out more information on cospovidone which is disintegrant, and also

what other products (including food stuffs) which contain E171 and E172.

It is diabolical that the government are encouraging the use of more natural colourant and yet allow

pharmaceutical companies to put these E numbers and coating on tablets which have still got to be digested.

taking antibiotics

On receiving a prescription for antibiotics it says "take at regular intervals and complete the course" I am informed by the pharmacist that I should take the medication at 0700 hours, 1200 hours, and 1800 hours. Am I missing something here? I thought that there were 24 hours in a day so what happens to the regularity between 1800 hours and 0700 hours the next day? Am I just giving the germs time to get used to the antibiotic overnight? Couldn't this be one of the reasons for the proliferation of MRSA? I would really like an answer to this. Annie

Antidepressants causing anger rage and suicidal tendencies

I started taking luvox antidepressants years ago and have noticed my personality changing, primarily what I think about. I started thinking violent thoughts and would get angry about the slightest things. The angry emotions would lead me to dwelling on thoughts of violence even killing someone. These thoughts never occured before I started the antidepressants. I became alarmed as it was causing me and my family to argue all the time about stupid things. One night after arguing with my wife I retreated to the study and decided to look up the side affects of luvox and was shocked to find some information that said people on luvox can get angry and violent with the people around them. It also mentioned that the boys that went into the school with guns and killed all there class mates were found to have been taking luvox. I also felt like killing myself alot, but just didn't have the guts to go through with it. I would get really angry and think of hurting someone and then I would think I don't want to hurt anyone I just want to kill myself before I do. I tried to get off the tablets before, but if I reduced them I would get massive withdrawal symptoms, and get a major swing of depression and black outs and brain zaps.

I found out that tryptophan (natural amino acid that is found in food) can be used as a natural antidepressant, but shouldn't be taken with anti depressants. So I thought I would start with a small dose of tryptophan and cut a small peice of my pill off. I did that and started to feel a bit better. After i did this for a week or so until I felt stable I would then increase the dose of tryptophan and further decrease the antidepressant. It took me a couple of months to get off the antidepressants, and couple of weeks of feeling a bit of a dizzy head. But I am now completely off the antidepressants, and have found I don't get angry or depressed anymore. I don't get suicidal thoughts or thoughts of violence, I am a different person, the one I remember I was when I was young. I regularly laugh and am optimistic and my wife has really noticed the difference and we are getting on a whole lot better. Since I have been off the antidepressants we haven't had a single argument.

Tryptophan in australia is hard to get because there was a ban on it years ago. What happened was that a dodgy factory in Japan made a contaminated batch of Tryptophan that had some bad effects on people and killed a few people. The authorities thought it was the tryptophan and consequently banned it, however later they found it was because the batch was contaminated and it wasn't the tryptophan. The government had since looked for other alternatives to tryptophan, that is when antidepressant drugs became popular and every body forgot about the effectiveness of Tryptophan. I brought some off the internet as you can to, it is my opinion the better alternative. It can be cheap to if you buy it in bulk, have a search on the internet.
