Many thanks to everyone for your replies. I spoke to my sister a few weeks ago and mentioned about using a non-flouride toothpaste, which she has done. She also has put her daughter onto calcium tablets. She reported back to me this weekend that the flecks are much less noticeable and they are all thrilled that something so simple could make such a difference. It's horrible being 15 anyway and just this small improvement has made such a difference.

The York Review found that around 48% of children living in areas where fluoride is artificially added to water have white flecks on teeth, called dental fluorosis. This is caused by too much fluoride which can damage tooth enamel. She should use a non-fluoride toothpaste. Boots chemists sell one and you can buy non-fluoride toothpaste from health food shops. My daughter got these because in my wisdom and with the advice of a dentist friend gave her fluoride tablets when she was young. She is now in her 30s and they are not as noticeable as they were.

These are not uncommon around Maldon in Essex where the natural water supply has been rich in fluoride for as long as there has been a water supply. Possibly your local water company has been adding the stuff to your water supply, or maybe your daughter loved the taste of fluoride toothpaste as a child and swallowed too much of it. I had to wean my grandson on to a non-fluoride toothpaste as the one he was using before was so tasty!

Google "Oil Pulling" and give it a try...I have read it has good results with the teeth...especially whitening them.

I think Tetracycline normally causes brown discolouration.

Fluorosis is much more likely as it can cause white fleck in its mild form. It can also cause teeth not to develop as it did with my daughter (she used to eat toothpaste - when I knew no better!)

Be aware of thyroid problem also.

If your water is fluoridated do not drink it and avoid fluoide in toothpaste - not easy!

My daughter is 21 now, she suffered intermitently from this very same thing. It always happens when she is low in calcium, I juts buy her some calcium tablets, and after a few days or so they disappear. Try this inexpensive way before you try other more expensive things and see if it works.

It could have been caused by being given the antibiotic tetracycline when young as this is the effect it has.

White flecks or patches on teeth can be caused by excess fluoride but if this is the reason ,to my knowledge, there is nothing that can be done to remove them other than to cover them with a dental veneer. These days we are all exposed to fluorides added to drinking water (check with your local water company) sometimes even when water is naturally high in fluorides, as is sometimes the case and it is also added to toothpastes and mouthwashes. With such a variety of sources it is impossible to control the amount being absorbed and even those who advocated fluoridation are beginning to change their views on whether this practice should be continued. Ask your dentist for his opinion and if it is fluorosis try to restrict as many of these sources as possible -- especially until your niece is older and thinks it is bad enough to justify having her incisors veneered

It could be using a toothpaste with fluoride in - your daughter could try a natural fluoride-free toothgel, such as Forever's Aloe Vera with Propolis (from the beehive). White Flecks on Teeth

My 15 year old niece has quite prominent white flecks on her teeth. The problem is that she is very self conscious about them, but as she is so young they can't put veneers on them until she's in her early 20's.

She has noticed that they do vary in prominence depending on her hormone cycles and were especially prominent when she was ill with flu recently. When she is at her optimum health they relatively unnoticeable, but she wonders what she can do to keep them that way for as long as possible.
