Sulphate reducing bacteria produce hydrogen sulphide from sulphate in the gut. Some people are poor at detoxifying hydrogen sulphide. This then damages the cells of the gut wall, causing ulcerative colitis. It is important to have a diet low in sulphur amino acids, as these convert to sulphate. Sulphate is needed by the gut, but should be absorbed from the bath. There are certain foods that contain a lot of boron or lectin, that should also be avoided, and certain fats are useful for repairing the gut wall. This is a drug-free approach, but it does need advice from someone who understands it.
