    Excess mucus

This reader is concerned about her friend’s 15-month-old son, who constantly has thick mucus streaming from his nose – even though he doesn’t have a cold.  The mucus is an opaque, whitish-green colour and is causing a rash on the child’s face.  The mother has tried cutting dairy from his diet and is consulting a homeopath, but so far there has been no change.  Do readers have any other ideas?

One reader thinks cranial osteopathy is worth a try, as it’s very effective for upper respiratory tract congestion.  Saline hot baths just before bedtime are also beneficial, according to Heidi.  Another reader’s advice, however, is to stick with homeopathy.  “Homeopathy can take time but it's usually very effective in such cases,” she says.

On the other hand, the symptom may well be due to an allergy or sensitivity.  One reader recommends contacting the British Institute for Allergy and Environmental Therapy (www.allergy.org.uk), who will be able to determine the likely cause and treat it.

The symtom may well be due to a sensitivity.  I would recommend contacting your nearest member of the British Institute for Allergy and Environmental Therapy, who will be able to determine both the likely cause and treat it.

    Hi

At around the same age as your friend's son, my mother told me I suffered from a similar problem and our doctor (in Switzerland) told my mother to give me saline hot baths just before bedtime (as hot as bearable of course) for a week. Apparently, It cured my problem completely.

    Re: Excess mucus

No indication is given as to how long the mother has persisted with homeopathy, but if it's less than 3 months it's worth persisting, provided of course she is confident that the homeopath is good. Homeopathy can take time but it's usually very effective in such cases.

As well as dairy it might be good to try excluding eggs and wheat products, this worked for my daughter

    Re: Excess mucus

I would introduce as much organic food as possible. And as the body automatically goes into detox mode during sleep and up until midday i would give the child nothing but organic fruit for breakfast. It cured my constantly streaming nose. Hope this helps

    Re: Excess mucus

I have found the SaltPipe effective - though probably too dificult for a 15 month old child - the leaflet quotes that it was successful for a 2 and half year old.  See www.thesaltpipe.co.uk

    Re: Excess mucus

At birth, my mother could not feed me, so she gave me cow's Milk. I reacted badly to it, rash, mucus but more importantly hear infections.

Usually heavy mucus is Milk and gluten reactions. I found pollen allergies to me were more very watery mucus.

I suggest you feed your son with just about only Carrot (if possible organic) juice, puree etc, and any orther vegetables to complement the diet. It worked wonders for me at that age, and no wheat or any gluten of any sort. You can add some good fat (coconut, olive butter oils)

Also check he does not have any hear infections. If not you might want to do a hear candling, it is the only safe way to clear the hear drum and more importantly the small internal gap between the 2 hears, which when blocks really make all these allergic reactions much worse.

Play confortable classical music to quiten the stress, of mother and child.

    Good luck, Alain

    Re: Excess mucus

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) excess mucus in children is mainly caused by improper diet. The mucus which is whitish-green colour indicates cold-dampness and can also be caused by eating too much almonds, peanuts, banana, chocolate. According to TCM, children's spleen which together with stomach creates the "energy" for the whole body (ingesting food as the energy for the body), are still very weak and not fully developed thus very sensitive to any dietary changes, even slightest allergy would cause the mucus. Please check your son's diet, does he like bananas, chocolate, peanuts? Those should be completely eradicated from his diet. Also, being in humid weather and overeating would cause dampness in the body (TCM theory) so please look more into his diet.

    Re: Excess mucus

Goat's milk, especially unpasteurised, is better for our bodies than cow's milk and this could help, however, try adding a little grated creamed coconut block to his cereals or sweets and it might be found that this will clear the infection, usually in about 12 hours.or slighly more (could be less). It is certainly worth trying. The creamed coconut block cost 60-85p from most supermarkets. Fresh coconut or coconut milk are equally as beneficial. If you do try it and it does clear the infection (which it should do) then please confirm it for the benefit of other posters.

Perhaps you could try garlic or chilli?  If he doesn't like the taste you could give him odourless power garlic in capsule form.
