This drug does contain fluorine and can be converted into fluoride which contributes to daily intake of fluoride. This will be important in situations where either people use fluoride containing toothpaste or water supplies are 'treated' with fluoride.
Flecainide is used to treat certain abnormalities of cardiac rhythm - not to be used in chronic atrial fibrillation. There is no mention of valve disease specifically in the literature however it is suggested that it be used in the absence of structural heart disease. Of course, mitral valve regurgitation is particularly associated with mitral valve disease. It is important, I think that you and your mother have a discussion with the consultant to discuss the precise reason for the flecainide being used and if there are alternatives.
