Abdominal swelling 6 months post hysterectomy

I had a hysterectomy nearly 6 months ago, which went through sucessfully. There were no post-operative complications, however, for the past two months I have continued to have swelling in my abdomen, which tends to get worse as the day progressses. My gynacologist seems to think it may be a bowel problem and has referred me to gastroentrology, even though I do not have any evident bowel problem.  Are there any other women who have suffered this symptom post hysterectomy, and if so, how long for, and how did it resolve?

Re: Abdominal swelling 6 months post hysterectomy

I had a hysterectomy 3 and a half months ago, since then I have suffered with a really heavy tummy ( a bit like I am heavily pregnant and the baby is very low), bad pain around my hips, bad pain across my middle belly making it very uncomfortable to wear trousers or skirts. I wake up with a flat tummy and as the day progresses it becomes really swollen, tight and sore - again as if I am heavily pregnant and I get pulling like pains, which is apparently trapped wind. Every time I go to the doctor I see a different one, some say it takes a while for the gut and bowel to work properly after being man-handled during surgery, another doctor thinks I may have had irritable bowel syndrome before my hysterectomy and that the surgery has made it flare up. Attempted work last week, found it too sore and my tummy too heavy so went back to the doctor and just about managed to get him to sign me off work for another week. I was originally told it would take around 12 weeks to sort it self out, but don't feel that I have improved for at all in the last 2 weeks.

I am also very interested to hear from any one else who have had this problem and how long it took them to go back to work, and how long it took them to recover and how it was resolved.

I would suggest seeing a professional Registered Homeopath. Check out the Society of Homeopaths website and find someone near you who has been in practice more than 5 years.

    1. Absolutely second that suggestion. Homeopaths also available via Alliance of Registered Homeopaths, HMA, FMH. Suggest in addition you request a classically trained homeopath.  2. From the Taoist medicine; rub tummy gently from top to bottom and round clockwise each 36 times. If you get loose stools also rub anti-clockwise.3. Eat fresh fruit 20 mins before breakfast and lunch. Take vitamin C + Zinc slow release with breakfast and lunch. 4. Breathing exercisesEnjoy and get well soon!Mari

Homeopathy would recommend a dose of SEPIA 30c, just one dose for ailments that arise from an hysterectomy.

My best advice would be to see a Qualified Homeopath in your area, make sure you are comfortable with the person you are seeing, as you may have to discuss uncomfortable issues in your life.

Giving up or drastically cutting down on  wheat won't do you any harm either.

I hope you solve your problem.

When I have a meal wich contains MSG in some form or name then I have a swollen stomach and some hours later also a swollen abdomen. It can last a day to get rid of these symptoms. I don't know what happens when your daily meals all contain MSG (mone sodium glutamate)

Re: Abdominal swelling 6 months post hysterectomy

I would guess that this lady has adhesions which are formed after nearly all operations.  These usually cause no trouble but in some people they pull organs out of place or even strangle them and this of course causes pain.  Doctors never mention this and many deny that adhesions can cause pain but I know to my cost that they do.  See also adhesion websites.  The only way to remove them is by surgery and this of course can result in even more adhesions.  There are very few surgeons who can do this with success and I had to go abroad for this reason.

I would suggest that this lady mentions this to her doctor.

Have just seen this message and wonder if this lady might also feel she is putting on weight generally as well as her stomach one of the first places to notice it anyway, was thinking maybe she is suffering with an underactive thyroid condition,  this can happened after any stressfull or traumatic incident have just been reading about it, because I have similar problem with stomach which I had been putting down to oldage etc. have been on thyroxine pills for years but have now found out my doseage has been to small owing to the way hypothyrodism is diagnosed by wrong assessment of blood test most GP dont not know about this and you have to research it your self there are several websites about this condition, google it put in underactive thyroid group. I found out about it by readind a book from  the Amazon website there are many books on this subject there which you can purchase at reasonable cost.  I dont work for Amazon by the way they just have a good selection of books on most subjects.Dont think I have seen anything about this on WDDTY and if they have not covered the subject, sorry if I am wrong,  would suggest it would be a good idead to as it is estimated this causes problems for many people with all sorts of symtoms which can be traced back to having an under or overactive thyroid and if fact help avoid getting blood pressue, needless to say I know suffer with high blood pressure I am angry about this because if adequate medication had been given I could have advoided this happening to me, and well as being fat. However I do wish this lady good luck, if she could ask her GP for a blood test and get lucky with the medication if she has got problems with got thyroid problem but if she finds she feels no better as I say she could questuin her treatment by getting advise from a group or a book....In fact  this may help many people Good luck
