    High blood pressure

A reader’s mother is suffering from high blood pressure.  “I think it may be genetic because she generally does enough exercise and has a fairly good diet,” he says.  Her consultant wants to put her on beta-blockers, but she is keen to find an alternative solution.  Can readers suggest any drug-free remedies?

    Re: High blood pressure

Blood pressure is one of the body's PHYSIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS - the systems which regulate all aspects of bodily function (ref MERCK MANUAL pages 3-5).  The problem for biomedicine is that until recently very little has been known about these systems. Besides researchers are far more interested in biomedicine.  We know that blood pressure is a system because it has high and low limits beyond which the body's function will endure catastrophic consequences.  These systems regulate sleeping, breathing, blood volume, blood cell content, digestion, excretion, etc. They are made up of networks of organs so the function of one system will affect that of another system and the function of a dysfunctional organ which is part of a number of systems can affect the stability of other systems.

High blood pressure is generally due to the increased effort required by the heart to pump blood around the body and to the brain.  If the blood is thicker it becomes harder to pump and blood pressure increases. If the spine is curved this too will increase the difficulty of pumping blood to the brain.

Virtual Scanning may be an option which this lady may wish to consider - or perhaps other dietary changes, drinking more water(perhaps eliminating alcoholic drinks), alternative forms of exercise - and/or of sensory therapies based upon such principles e.g. reflexology, colour therapy, etc.

    Re: High blood pressure

Dehydration is a MAJOR cause of hypertension.

Until she drinks half her bodyweight (in pounds) in ounces of water a day her chances of getting better are much reduced.

A diet of fresh, organic produce and free range, organic meats..INCLUDING THE FAT,is essential for optimum health.

Excellent health is the ONLY prevention and cure for disease and high blood pressure is just an indicator that she is not healthy.

Paul Cheks' book HOW TO EAT,MOVE AND BE HEALTHY is HIGHLY recommended.

    Re: High blood pressure

Hypnosis and meditation can help reduce blood pressure.  One other thing to consider is whether there is anything causing high stress levels which could increase blood pressure.

    Re: High blood pressure

Ayuvedic Mukta Vati worked for me. My blood pressure was VERY high about 3 years ago. I started on the full dose of 2 tablets morning and night an hour before eating and although the website said it would take 3 days for the blood pressure to start dropping it took mine 6 days!! Now I only have to take 1 tablet morning and night 3 days a week and my blood pressure is normal (or even below!!) It must be Ivy's Mukta Vati - google for it and find your local supplier. It can only be found online. This particular brand which I trust is only made in one temple in India. look at www.muktavati.com   Try 1 month anf if it works  for you it is soooo much cheaper to buy 6 months at a time.

    Re: High blood pressure

I have been involved in helping my Mum control her high blood pressure. She's a born worrier which does not help her condition. She has been hospitalised twice now from the side effects of beta-blockers and Ace-inhibitors. They have probably caused more harm than good. It is down to the attention given by her GP that this has happened. She was given too strong a dose the first time with Atenolol, then again with the combination of drugs including Bisoprolol.

The side effects included serious congestion of her Upper Respiratory Tract, leading to Pulmonary Edema, which meant she was spitting up blood. As you might tell I was furious that this was happening to my Mum, so I looked into the drugs she was on, Bisoprolol 2.5mg and Eprosarten 600mg. She took these first thing in the morning, and her blood pressure was still high.

Through reading the Lancet online I discovered that the side effects from these drugs could cause what my Mum suffering from. I read extensively, monitored my Mum and gradually took her off the Eprosarten altogether, (which was safe to do) and changed her dosage of Bisoprolol to 2 x 1.25mg taken in the morning and late afternoon.

The results were that her lungs started to clear, her blood pressure started to become more regulated and lower for the first time in years.

She has since changed her GP, unfortunately she can't come off the drug Bisoprolol as it can have serious side effects to stop it immediately.

She has been taking more celery, rhubarb and chinese herbal tea, which are high in pressure reducing elements, and she has moderate blood pressure instead of continually high.

I would like to say that she has stopped taking the Beta blocker Bisoprolol, but she isn't confident enough to challenge medicine, and knows that at the age of 78, her blood pressure is going to be higher than that of someone younger. 145/80 is nothing to be too concerned about, especially since she was 172/100.

Good luck and hope this info was helpful.

    Re: High blood pressure

Fleur de Sel (Celtic Sea Salt) is the finest natural blood pressure regulator.  Contrary to conditioned belief, unrefined sea salt is so good for our health because it is full of minrerals and trace elements - removed from most other salts by a degrading industrial process.

Deterioration in our health is often brought about by lack of minerals.  Even vitamins cannot truly do their job without the presence of minerals. I have been using Fleur de Sel daily for over 10 years. Taken over a 3-4 month period it has reduced long-term blood pressure conditions in many of my clients.  Thankfully it is now available in Sainsburys. Go to the Special Section : Fleur de Sel costs £3.99 for a small tum of approx.125 grams

    Re: High blood pressure

I had very high blood pressure due to excessive weight and alcohol consumption. I am fighting these two problems with some success. Initially the GP put me on Atenolol, a beta blocker. Even at the lowish dose of 25mg daily it had horrendous adverse effects (there's no such thing as a "side" effect). When I found out it it was the atenolol, after 18 months, I simply stopped it, whereupon the effects gradually wore off. Two years without atenolol now, and I am on a very low dose of a "pril" drug (lisinopril, 5 mg a day), together with a daily multivitamin tablet, a Vitamin B Complex, an EPO capsule and an EPA capsule (fish oil from Holland & Barrett). The doctor's nurse has been doing regular monthly BP checks. My BP last week was down to 148/80, reasonable for my age (60), so she has left me a six-month gap until my next appointment.

I cheated and got my BP down fairly naturally by taking a daily dose of dark chocolate as well. I eat a 10 gm square, half at night and half in the morning. It has to be the 85% cocoa solids version. The Co-op do a Fairtrade one, 100 gm for £1.29, and there are others like Green & Black's, but presently Morrison's are running a deal on Lindt, 2 bars for £2, so it only costs 10p per day.  Laurence.

    Re: High blood pressure

Focusing on Kidney function and cleaning in addition could be helpful as kidney function sometimes goes with blood pressure function and when there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the heart etc then this is the body's tip off that the kidneys need a little clean out.  Watermelon, parsley & asparagus are useful for that, and I'd go with the sea salt in water once a day as well as (lots of) fresh lemon, skin & all  in water during the day.  Additionally controlled deep breathing through the nose can be invaluable.

    Re: High blood pressure

I tend to agree with you on this one Blobby!

Also don't use any vegetable/seed oils... but cook with a little 'grass fed' butter or Virgin coconut oil.Polyinsaturated vegetable oils are possibly concerned with this issue.

Limit your ingestion of ALL sugars and stick with a diet of fresh, natural foods.

Ensure that the exercise is 'sweat and out of breath' sufficient type! A stroll or brisk walk, does not count as exercise in this respect.

    Re: High blood pressure

In my experience high BP does sometimes have a genetic component.  In my own family this is due to an overactive adrenaline response to daily life, even its minor stresses.  This has the effect of further depleting the kidney energy (Oriental medicine reference), which in Chinese medicine is the basic cause of essential hypertension.  Meditation calms the adrenaline response, but it is also important to take up an internal exercise system such as tai chi to build core strength and aid the energy of the kidneys.  Any non-biomedical treatment for high BP requires effort.

I tried 14 different products to lower my "genetic" blood pressure, none worked. The only product which worked for me, but only for 6 months, was an ayurvedic product called Mukta Vati

Consider taking magnesium. I found it works.
