    Eyesight

For a number of years now  my eyes have gone through periods of "foggy vision" where it seems as if you are looking through a dirty lens.

If I blink lots of times,  it washes away, but then can come back again. . It is getting worse  as time goes on.  But my opticionas cannot see anything wrong and do not know what I am talking about. (I have tried several opticians and have even gone to Morfields, but no one can tell me what is happeneing.  I am a musician, and at times the "foggy vision" gets so bad that I cannot see the music in front of me unless I blink very hard for a number of times. It also effects my reading at times.  But there are periods of times when the vision is OK, so I do not think it is cateracts.  Can anyone help?

    Hi

I used to get similar periods of foggy vision which resolved once I identified my food intolerances and excluded those foods from my diet. In my experience food intolerance testing is not reliable - you might need to follow a strict elimination diet, adding new foods only once every 4 days to be sure of identifying all problem foods.

    Re: Eyesight

Blurred or foggy vision can be closely related to B2, B6, B5 deficiency.  Try a good quality B vitamin supplement.  Definately seek a doctors opinion and gain clearance for the potential diabetes.  Diabetes can be a very sneaky condition with serious health implications other than eyesight problems.

    Re: Eyesight

Among other causes, you can get temporary foggy vision from any of a variety of illnesses than can affect nerves, in this case the optic nerve.  Some of those illnesses are autoimmune, like MS or Type I diabetes or maybe others.  (I have at least a couple of autoimmune diseases, and have had the same thing happen with my eyes.)  There's also something called ophthalmic migraines, optical migraines, or ocular migraines, (not the painful kind of migraines) that are believed to have to do with spasms of the blood vessels behind the eyes.  If you're really only seeing an optician, you seriously need to get to an ophthalmologist.  If it's autoimmune, most doctors are simply not competent in that area, and you may need to get to a major medical center.  Good luck!

    Re: Eyesight

I have a whole host of eye diseases and spend masses of time with specialists looking into my eyes and conversing with others similarly afflicted with the same rare disease.

At Moorfields, they should be able to detect the presence of an auto immune disease through their examination of your eye, especially the back part. If they didn't dilate your pupils to conduct an exam of the back of your eyes, go back. I would be surprised if they hadn't done this as a matter of course. Their examination would also determine the presence of cataracts and the very first signs of cataract. The best time to go back is when your vision is foggy.

If you were experiencing ocular migraines, you would also see jagged lines around your vision as well as a blur in your central vision . It's fairly spectacular and not easily confused with something else.

A really simple cause of blurred, foggy vision which clears with blinking is dry eyes. They can do a very simple test for this at Moorfields. All that's needed to put this right is artificial tears, just make sure they prescibe the preservative free variety. Another cause of transient blurred vision is high optical pressure. Did they check your eye pressures at Moorfields?

In your shoes, I'd go back to Moorfields and keep going back until an explanation is given. Another thing to consider is the side effects of common drugs you may be taking. If you are taking anything, read the patient leaflets and you may find a side effect causing blurred vision.

An eye doc once said to me that they can see the presence of other diseases when they examine eyes. Sight is precious: you need to find the cause before you experiment with alternative treatments, guessing at what's wrong. Supplementing with selenium, for example, can cause high optical pressure.

    Re: Eyesight

There are some good suggestions on the responses to your question. To add to these and perhaps help you get to the bottom of what is causing this, the Chinese medical thinking is that the eyes are ruled by the liver meridian, and so perhaps looking at what you have eaten the day previously may give you some clues. However if this is a long term condition you may consider doing some liver regeneration work! Paul Pitchford wrote an excellent book called 'Healing with whole foods'. You can get this on Amazon. Among many other items he includes a whole section on foods that regenerate the liver. Since the liver is considered to balance the whole body and regenerates very fast, you can't do yourself any harm in following his advice and may clear up lots of other issues at the same time.

Secondly, one responder is quite correct in saying that medication can affect the eyes, particularly steroids whether taken orally or as a cream (many people don't realise that creams used for eczema contain steroids). You might check this out.

Lastly make sure you are reading or playing music in good light. As we get older our eyes need adequate light for us to be able to read! Simple but obvious.

    Re: Eyesight

My mother and Grandmother have experienced this 'foggy vision' and found it to be linked to a yeast imbalance in the gut - more commonly known as Candida, perhaps you could, as others have suggested, look to nutritional diaries and see a nutritional therapist, good luck,

You may wish to consider parasites as there are 5 types that infest the eyeball that I know of!  Being host to an unpleasant life form such as this is not normally something ppeople, want to consider but the fact is that parasites are the root cause of many poor health conditions.

    Re: Eyesight

I would not want to worry you unnecessarily, but intermittent bouts of 'ground glass' eyesight can be the early signs of the neurological condition MS and I just wondered if you have been referred to a neurologist.   If this has been going on for many years and you can blink it away, it is of course highly unlikely that there is anything more developing so I would greatly increase your consumption of the anti-oxidant vitamins ACE, B vits, and cut out sugar.  There are in fact now supplement complexes especially made for the eyes.

    Re: Eyesight

This may or may not help you, but it won't harm you and it tastes good... Goji berries. You can order them online but if you can find a Chinese grocer in your area you can probably pick up a package fairly cheaply. Eat a small handful everyday. If you eat oatmeal/porridge it is a very easy thing to add while cooking.. Gojis are loaded with anti-oxidants and traditionally have been used to improve eyesight.

    Re: Eyesight

I understand that the writer of the 'foogy vision' message has been to Moorfields but the description given suggests Narrroe Angle Glaucome as a possibility.  The usual Glaucoma can be checked at the opticians but NAG needs to be diagnosed by an expert with a gonioscope. It would be worth checking this out as attacks of foggy vision can precede sudden loss of sight and general prostration.  In NAG the eye pressure is normal between attacks of foggy vision but in the usual open angle glaucoma the eye pressure is raised all the time.

    Re: Eyesight

I have heard of someone with similar problems and he had, like you, been to various places, high street opticians, eye clinics at local hospitals and was even told by his own hospital not to come back anymore. (Seemed a bit harsh to me as I guess they thought it was imagination ) But through a friend who worked at one of the major London hospitals he was seen by a specialist and would you believe it he had a cateract on the back of his eye and can now see perfectly, not heard of this before but you must insist on having your vision ivestigated further, it will not go away. Good luck.

    Re: Eyesight

I have just read your post and it struck a chord with me.  I also suffered from foggy vision when everything was blurred and it was like looking through tears which I had to blink away - it also affected my vision to the extent that I started to use reading glasses.  What has helped me is giving up sugar - the foggy vision disappeared and I can read without the glasses.  When I do eat too much sugar I can really tell the difference in my eyesight.  Maybe this could be the answer.  I hope that you find something that helps soon.
