    Re: Thyroid condidtion

Hi Adelaide, thanks for your comments.  You have reassured me a lot about taking the thyroxine!  Glad to hear you managed to successfully treat your cancer without chemo and radiation.  Can you please tell me any more about the skin condition you mentioned, myxedema, because I have terrible itching which I can find nothing to relieve.  I have tried millions of approaches but nothing has worked.  I had it before the thyroid diagnosis and taking the thyroxine has not helped it, so maybe it is nothing to do with my thyroid.

    Many thanks again, margaret

    Hi Margaret

You've had lots of interesting advice, but based on my experience, I would get the enlargement checked out by your GP.  My mother noticed the lump 12 years ago, as being similar to one she'd had 40 years ago - enlarged thyroid, half of which was removed at the time, the other side enlarged 20 years later and had to be removed.  Mine seemed to stay the same until 2 years ago, when I experienced problems with breathing, coughing and choking.  Thyroid levels remained normal.  But the x-ray showed it had grown inwards and was crushing my windpipe, I had to have the whole thing removed.  And in the biopsy, they found cancer, in the non-enlarged side.  This isn't usual, and thyroid cancer is the most treatable of all the cancers, but the enlarged thyroid, if it is the thyroid that's enlarged, does need monitoring.  And thyroid levels weren't affected, in my case!  I'm now having to take 200mg of thyroxine a day, to counteract any return of the cancer as well as making up for the lack of thyroid.

    Good luck.
    Dawn
