    Re: Post Nasal Drip

    Hi Rasselas

Bendroflumethaizide is not an ACE inhibitor, but I still think it's worth you checking for side effects.  PND isn't listed as a side effect for ACE inhibitors but it does have that effect in some people.  Bear in mind that if a side effect affects less than 2% of the trial subjects then it doesn't have to be listed.  If you want to see some of the side effects reported for a drug then go to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) which is the government agency responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work, and are acceptably safe http://www.mhra.gov.uk/Safetyinformation/Howwemonitorthesafetyofproducts/Medicines/TheYellowCardScheme/YellowCarddata/Druganalysisprints/index.htm

Its worth checking any other drugs you are taking see www.bnf.org .  In my experience neither GPs nor consultants look at the side effects of medication as a cause of PND, consequently a lot of NHS time and money is taken up unnecessarily.  Ask your doctor if you can try coming of the drug for a few days and see if your PND clears up, it usually only takes a couple of days for you to notice a difference.

    Good luck

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

Thanks for all that Susie, I am trying your suggestion, stopping the tablets for a few days. [This is day 1] I have tried the sites you mention and can't find ref to PND & Bendroflumethiazide, so I suspect if that is sometimes responsible for PND, it must come in at under 2% . (Or maybe no one has made a connection) I'm not taking any other medication except Glucosmine and can't find any contra indications about that, except 'don't eat if allergic to shrimps.'  Which I'm not.

I'll post how I get on in case any other PND sufferers are interested. Thanks again, and have you had success in treating PND with acupuncture? My local acupuncturist had never had anyone present with it, so he didn't know if it's effective, and therefore I didn't go for it. Rass

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

Could I ask why you suggest Slippery Elm, Jerry? Has it worked for you? I know its supposed to be good for stomach complaints, but have never heard of it for excess mucus, so am curious why it might help. thanks, Rass

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

    Hi Rass

I have had a few patients with this problem and acupuncture has resolved it in all cases so far, so perhaps you just need to find another acupuncturist if the one you contacted wasn't comfortable.  Look one up in your area on the British Acupuncture council website at http://www.acupuncture.org.uk/

    Good luck

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

Hi Susie, I have been off the Bendrofluomethiazide for about 10 days now, and sadly it's not making much difference to the catarrh. But it was worth a try. I will go for acupuncture when I've got the money. Meanwhile upping my water to 2 litres a day seems to be the best help.

    Rasselas:
I've had good results from chiropractor/osteopathy in the past when I lived in Devon. Now I am in the Sheffield area and don't know a good one up here, but I will try to check that out.

That's interesting - did you have this same problem when you lived in Devon, Rasselas?  I have experienced it since I came to live in Coventry, having previously lived on the Isle of Wight with no symptoms at all.  Could it have something to do with pollution from living in a big city with much traffic?  That has always been my theory, as I'd never had this annoying problem in my life before & I'm over 60!

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

Hi HJ, Perhaps its just old age!   I'm over 60 too and PND started when I was 56 and was going through a fair bit of trauma. I lived in a small town in Devon, and one not that much bigger now. I am now trying Kali Bich supplied by Galen Homeopathics in Dorset @£5 (which arrives the following day.) I will post my results with that in a while.  I know I'm made worse by both dairy and wheat and spices. Very annoying as I love them all. Probably chocolate and alcohol  and eggs and everything else I like contributes, but  life is too short to miss everything good about it so I sometimes take an allergy pill and just have a bread roll.... Living dangerously I know, Rass

ps. 3 rd Sept: The Kali Bich didn't seem to make a dent in this condition. I am going to try Cranial Osteopathy tomorrow. Will post the result.

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

    Hi dear,

My chronic sinus problem and medication :

    I am a 50yrs old american.
I have had chronic recurring sinusitis for the past 20 years. After countless rounds of antibiotics and 3 CT scans, I was
    told I needed sinus surgery.

After having 2 sinus infections within a month, I found Sinofresh products( nasal mist and throat spray). I have been using it for 7 weeks now, and so far,
so good. They really help with drainage and does not have an unpleasant after-taste.These are the only things I have ever
used that work. I had tried pills, over the counter sprays and prescription steroid sprays, and nothing had given me relief.

Be a little patient; Sinofresh products improve the environment of your sinuses over time with regular use. Also,

Staphylococcal aures count is found to be decreased after using these products. As for the smell/taste, you get used to

Sinofresh products, and I never minded it that much anyway. And also these are a non - habit forming products.  Now I am

recommending Sinofresh to everyone I know. You can online purchase these products either from www.sinofreshstore.com or from

any one of the following stores -
     www.wegmans.com / store.publix.com / www.natlallergy.com / www.drugstore.com
Thank you for being with me. All the best, use sinofresh and  get rid of sinus allergies .

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

I started to have post nasal drip in my twenties I am a young 54, it has got worsen since my resistance has weaken becasue I have been through difficult times, I have been to the doctor and I am on anitbotics and a anithistmane now.  I notice what I eat has a lot to do with it.  I would suggest you find a doctor that will help you.

Also this is probably against the rules I am a Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist and everything is cause and effect from time without beginning, everything is based on karma(thought, action and deed) it is either positve or negative, there is the Lotus Sutra, there are 28 chapters, the 2nd and 16th chapter is the heart of it by Burton Watson, his is the best English version, but I know if I help others without agenda I will overcome this problem, however we can not get rid of the  4 absolutes, being born, growing old, sickness and death.  Please look into this Buddhist there are 6 temples in American Myosetsuji, in Flushing, Queens  on Beech Street, is one of them.

I know you will say how does a religion change this, but Buddhist is a way of life, if you protect the law of Cause of Effect from time without beginning, you can prolong your life.

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

Hi Rassales,  Any progress with your trials on different methods..  Can you share with us your venture?

I recently had been complaining about  irritation at the throat, and then followed by uncontrollable cough as a result of the irritation.  And then followed by sneezes, which seems like an attempt to dispell foreign object (particles) that causes the irritation.

Whether it is actually foreign matter that caused the irritation or not, I cannot say.  But what happens after the episode is usually followed by some form of phelgm at the throat, foamy phelgm with transparent mucous.  Very disburbing and unpleasant.  I also noticed that the cough is sometimes uncontrollable and involuntary.

Sometime back, I had a bout of flu, which lingerred on for sometime, and did not seem to have recovered from that bout of flu.

So, is this PND or something else?

Like to hear from your experience. regarding your condition, so I can understand it better.

Plantago has helped me in the past. Not sure if it's good to keep taking or how it works but it does!

Hello Adrienne,  Nice to know that Plantago has helped you, but I am sorry, I am not sure what is this Plantago.  Can you elaborate a bit more?

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Post Nasal Drip

    Rasselas:
Hi, Has anyone got any suggestions about treating Post Nasal Drip? I am middle-aged, don't eat dairy or wheat, and spices make the catarrh worse too. The only thing I find alleviates the symptoms is chewing gum, but that has aspartame in, so I am a reluctant chewer, and it doesn't address the condition itself. Drinking water helps a bit and painkillers numb my throat and then I don't feel the mucus and cough less, but nothing I have tried actually tackles the root cause. What is it?  Is it an allergy to something? The ENT Doctors haven't a clue, and have no remedies. I have had PND for about four years, developed after a stressful time, and it drives me mad. No halitosis, or polyps, just a constant thick mucus that I usually can't cough up, but causes me to cough and clear my throat a lot, and choke in the night. Any help would be appreciated. thanks. Rasselas
