M.E.: It's not all in the mind, it's in the gut

Spare a thought for the M.E.(myalgic encephalitis) sufferer.  For years he and she has been scorned by a medical establishment that has seen the problem as being all in the mind. As such, the M.E. sufferer has been labelled an hysteric who is merely attention seeking.

This attitude has become so bad that medical associations - and even the World Health Organization - have urged doctors to take the condition seriously, and to treat it as they would any other health problem.

Now they really might have to.  A new study has discovered that M.E., or chronic fatigue, isn't in the mind at all - it's in the gut.

Most M.E. sufferers also complain about a long-standing stomach problem, such as indigestion or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) - but doctors had assumed these were merely symptoms of a larger problem, real or imagined.

But researchers in the USA believe that the stomach problems may well point to the real cause of the M.E. - an enterovirus.  An enterovirus infects the bowel, and can cause severe respiratory and gut infections.  There are more than 70 different types of enterovirus, and they can affect the central nervous system, the heart and muscles - producing M.E.-like symptoms.

Following up their theory, the researchers examined the records of 165 M.E. patients, and discovered that the vast majority had suffered an enteroviral infection many years earlier.

If this is indeed the primary cause, M.E. could be easily and successfully treated with a simple anti-viral drug.

Thank goodness medicine is moving along, however slowly.

I'm old enough to remember the time that any woman who was feeling fatigued, and complained to her docter,  got the same response. "You're just depressed. Have a baby, get a job, decorate the house, __________(fill-in the blank)______."

We have a long way to go, but it's a LITTLE better now.

I have had M.E for six years. How can I get an anti-viral drug? Also if it's in the gut, is that why it responds to dietry treatments specifically the anti-candida diet.

It's nice to see a more positive spin for the beleagured ME patient for a change, but this new data whilst very hopeful is only one of over 4000 pieces of research which show conclusively that authentic ME is indeed an organic disease and not all in the mind.  Indeed we have known for decades that this is the case - it just seems that few want to actually acknowledge it.

For those who really want to discover the wealth of good quality biomedical information there is about this disease, they could not do better than go to the following websites;

I have been wondering if I have M.E.  It has had a slow onset and I thought that it might just be perimenopausal.  I experience decreased energy and joint and muscle aches and pains (and weakness) that i never used to.

Many years ago I had ME type of symptoms after Asian Flu. i was getting worse until I was treated by the late Dr Westlake for miasms. I think it was homoeopathic extract of thymus gland backed up with homoeopathic phosphorus. Anyway after a week of feeling suicidal things went into reverse and about a year later I was completely clear. That was a virus originally, but it could have been a secondary opportunistic infection. The main thing was that there was no doubt about it but homoeopathy completely changed the direction of the illness.

Brian's mentioning of ME in a positive light will be appreciated by many.  Alas a few corrections are needed:

1. The correct full description of M.E. is 'Myalgic Encephalomyelitis', not 'Myalgic Encephalitis'.

2. The equation of this disease with 'Chronic Fatigue' is incorrect and misleading.  The WHO has since 1969 categorised 'ME' as a neurological disease, in their ICD-10 issue under G93.3, whereas diseases characteristic of 'Chronic Fatigue' are categorised as Mental and Behavioural Disorders under F48.  'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome' on the other hand in ICD-10 is equated with 'M.E.' - This issue is a crucial one and a subject of ongoing arguments, essentially because a certain group of UK psychiatrists have tried to reclassify the neurological entity 'M.E.' as a mental disorder and hence equating it with 'Chronic Fatigue'. - The story is long and complex, but the association of M.E. with enteroviruses is not new and is indeed well documented. - More importantly: The recently published NICE guideline on CFS/ME have been heavily criticised and are regarded by most as unacceptable, unworkable and to many practitioners - useless. Their principal recommended 'treatments' are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) - the former was shown to be largely ineffective and the latter potentially harmful in several patient surveys on over 3000 patients.  NICE was advised of these and many other relevant details, but instead relied heavily on a flawed systematic review carried out at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York. - The ever more complex story of M.E. continues ...

Re: Myreene Tobin's comment. For the past seven years I have felt 'not right'; unable to cope with stress like I used to, fatigued, frequently ill. Recently found a book about Adrenal Fatigue which has changed my life. Turns out that I have most of the symptoms of weakened, though still functioning, adrenal glands. Most of the tests that they do these days are for Addison's Disease which is a complete shutdown of the adrenals but they don't highlight weakened adrenals. It is definitely worth a look at the website at least. Go to www.adrenalfatigue.org for more information.

Re: ME. For those living in the London, UK, area. There is an amazing homeopath called Mr Lee who works above Hall's Chemist in Hatch End. I first saw him back in 1989 and he has been my medical practitioner of choice since. Mr Lee has long held the stance that he is able to help ME sufferers, possibly cure them. "One month for every year they've had the disease". If you want to try him the address is 400 Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, Middx, UK.

I wish you all well.

Read Dr Eric Rentz in the US monthly publication "The Doctor's Prescription for Healthy Living" Volume 7 Numbers 9 & 10, published by Freedom Press.  He recommends a good quality (colloidal) silver hydrosol, such as Sovereign Silver (over the counter) or Argentyn 23 (only as prescribed by a qualified practitioner) to treat the viral condition that usually is found in Chronic Fatigue sufferers.

I would like to send the details of this study of ME to a friend sufferer but it is referred to only as "a new study" by "researchers in the USA". Could Bryan Hubbard give us the link to it?

best wishes.

In my healing practice I have several clients with M.E. One of these has been having treatment with a Radionics practitioner with great success. He explained that her M.E was worsened by several parasites in various organs. She has Asthma (and IBS regularly). He started her on a course of treatment of Herbs taken in tea form, and gave her an electronic machine to 'zap' these parasites from her system, with a Model A-6 Square Wave Generator- which produces electrical pulses at a fixed rate. The pulsed current of electricity can hardly be felt as the machine goes through it's cycle - which is about an hour. She was advised to use this machine three times a day, gradually decreasing to once a day over a stipulated time.

This is a method started by a "Dr. Hulda Clark" who believed that parasites were behind the causes of many illnesses and that by killing them with small bursts of electricity over a period of time, the patient would start to heal again. The pulsed current of electricity can hardly be felt as you use the machine.

My client is now back at work (part time) and is progressing extreemly well. She says she feels better than she has for 4 years and has not had a recurrence of her Asthma or IBS since she finished her course of with the machine and herbs. Just as a note - a stomach ulcer is known to be caused by a parasite!

Nearly all illnesses derive from the gut, especially autoimmune conditions such as ME.

A potent probiotics such as the Neways Advance Probiotics formulated from the lady herself who has been treating children with what she calles GUT AND PSYCHOLOGY syndrome (ADHD, dyslexia, gut and bowel problems) for the last 10 yrs in Cambridge, UK. Her book, Gut and Pscyhology Syndrome is a must read for anyone with these conditions as it helps you to understand the underlying course and ways to treat it. She uses Mineral/vitamin supplements such as the Neways Maximol sub-ionic colloidal minerals.

seeing the comment above, I must add the Cancer Prevention Group in the UK , CancerActive talks about parasites treatment. Parasites are also implicated in cancer and it is recommended that we rid ourselves of them twice a year. David Broom, Medical Herbalist/Kirlian photography/Vega testing expert uses the Vega test to treat this. I heard him speak at a seminar recently.

Canceractive www.canceractive.com uses the Neways PARAFREE , a herbal medicine in a tablet form over a course of 56 days. Firstly you need to use the PURITEA to cleanse the bowel then use the antiparasite treatment. David and many practitioners I know also use this.

I saw Kirlian photos of one of David's patients with ME. Her energy aura magnified many folds and was less broken after treatment. Her energy regained and she went to work.

He treated her with Neways Maximol mineral solutions + Revenol antioxidants + avoid toxic chemicals from food (ie go organic) and personal care products such as Neways. Also Probiotics is a must. See www.neways.co.uk

Sorry the Vega test detects the parasites, and checks for chemical sensitivities, it does not treat the parasite. See article on PARASITES or VEGA TESTING in www.canceractive.com

I have David's clinic details if anyone is interested, email me on serenace_2000@yahoo.com

Hi..I wrote the book LIVING WITH AND RECOVERING FROM CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME: DEBILITATING IMMUNOPATHIC RELAPSING ENCEPHALOMYELITIS.   Note: the acronym is DIRE!

But the unelightened MDs and psychobabblists are still pushing for DIRE patients to EXERCISE.

They just don't get it.  A recent paper in the Brit. Med. J. shows they haven't come very far

at all in their understanding of this awful illness (since my research for the book over a decade ago).

The fault lies not in the patients who suffer, but in the pejorative, cuckoo name they have given

this neuroimmune disorder.   I've reached out to CFIDS sufferers at: http://medical-healthalerts.blogspot.com

I have recently started suffering with what I believe is ME. I was very healthy until I got a stomach virus. My doctor said that I should just wait for the virus to pass. Three weeks later I started suffering from tremors, depression, musle sches and fatigue. My confused pcp is still running countless ekg's and blood tests. Now I am reading all the articles I can find on ME and it seems like the best thing I can do is a Neurologist. Good luck to all of you.
