Adverse Reactions

A brush with DEG

Despite deciding to execute their food and drug supremo, the Chinese are still shipping in deadly imports into the USA.  The latest scare is over toothpaste that may contain the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol (DEG).

So far, contaminated toothpaste from China has turned up in Panama, and a spot check at the US border found a consignment of toothpaste that contained around 3 per cent DEG by weight.

Americans are advised to throw away any toothpaste that has been manufactured in China.  The most likely culprits are brands bought at 'bargain' retail outlets, including products in the Cooldent range, Dr Cool, Everfresh, Superdent, Clean Rite, and DentaPro.  All the products are manufactured by Goldcredit and Suzhou City Jinmao Daily Chemicals Company.

The eagle-eyed among you will note that the majority of the products play around with the word 'cool'.  Perhaps the marketing boys were inspired by the fact that DEG is primarily found in antifreeze.

If your toothpaste is one of those suspected of containing DEG - and you're just too much of a tightwad to throw it away - don't swallow it.  That way you may just survive until the winter when your toothpaste can be spread on your car screen.
